OUR HISTORY

A Century of Service in Wagga Wagga

Since its beginnings in 1929, the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga has been driven by a simple but powerful idea: that local people, working together, can create lasting change.

Formed at the onset of the Great Depression, the club quickly became a force for good in the region—supporting families in need, building community connections, and laying the foundations for nearly a century of service. Today, that same spirit continues to guide everything we do.

Our Story

The Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga held its first meeting on 17 October 1929 and was officially chartered on 18 January 1930, with its Charter Dinner held later that year. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Albury, the club’s early leadership—headed by founding president Harry Mitchelmore—set a strong precedent for service, integrity, and community impact.

In its earliest years, the club responded directly to the challenges of the Great Depression, helping resettle families in areas such as Gumly Gumly and North Wagga. These early initiatives established a pattern of practical, hands-on service that continues to define the club today

As the decades progressed, the club played a key role in the growth of Rotary across the Riverina, sponsoring the formation of several neighbouring clubs and contributing leaders to Rotary at district and international levels. Notably, past members have served as District Governors and even in senior leadership within Rotary International.

From the mid-20th century onwards, the club expanded its focus to include youth development, health initiatives, and community infrastructure. Projects such as the Borambola Camp provided life-changing experiences for young people, while ongoing support for local organisations—including hospitals, schools, and community services—strengthened the social fabric of the region.

In more recent decades, the club has continued to evolve while remaining grounded in its core values. Milestones such as the admission of its first female member in 2002 and the appointment of its first female president in 2007 reflect a club that is both proud of its heritage and responsive to change.

Today, the Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga remains an active and visible part of the community. Its Annual Book Fair has become a much-loved local tradition and the club’s largest fundraiser, supporting a wide range of projects and initiatives across Wagga Wagga and the broader Riverina.

As we look ahead, we do so with pride in our history—and with a continued commitment to making a difference where it matters most.
