Darkness to Light is a proud Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga initiative dedicated to supporting people with vision impairment through practical service, advocacy, and life-changing assistance. Founded by Dr Alok Sharma in 2005, it is a truly Riverina-grown project, conceived and developed with the support of the local community, Rotarians, and friends of Rotary.
Today, Darkness to Light works across three key areas. In India, it operates as a RAWCS project in partnership with the Rotary Club of Yamunanagar Riviera, helping extend eye-health support through an established international Rotary partnership. In the Riverina, the project supports people who are vision impaired and the organisations that assist them. In East Timor, Darkness to Light supports the East Timor Eye Project, helping fund training for local eye surgeons, outreach work, and surgical support in areas of need.
The project’s impact has been both local and international. Its work has included support for Wagga Wagga Base Hospital, assistance to Vision Australia, technology support for individuals with low vision, camps and activity days for vision-impaired participants, support for blind cricket, and contributions to eye-health training and outreach beyond Australia. Its achievements reflect a sustained commitment to restoring independence, expanding opportunity, and improving quality of life for people living with vision impairment.
At its heart, Darkness to Light reflects Rotary at its best: local people creating meaningful opportunities, building connection, and helping bring dignity, confidence, and hope to others.
